UPDATED: In delivering an amazing Super Bowl, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks made ratings history, NBC said Monday.

The game averaged 114.4 million viewers, making it the most-watched program in U.S. TV history. It surpasses last year’s Super Bowl, the previous record holder, by 2.2 million.

Sunday’s big game was also the highest-rated Super Bowl since 1986. The game put up a 47.5 rating. In 1986, the game put up a 48.3 rating. The highest-rated Super Bowl remains the 1982 game, which posted a 49.1.

In Central Florida, the game averaged — get this — 1.352 million viewers. The post-game was seen by 691,548 viewers. “The Blacklist” drew 257,062.

The Patriots won 28-24 in the exciting Super Bowl XLIX. The game peaked to 120.8 million viewers from 9:45 to 10 p.m. ET during the fourth quarter, NBC said.

Katy Perry also made ratings history with her colorful halftime show. She was seen by 118.5 million, up 3 million from the halftime last year featuring Bruno Mars. Perry has bragging rights to the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show ever with entertainment.

The happy ratings news spread to NBC’s special telecast of “The Blacklist,” which attracted a whopping 26.5 million viewers. It was the biggest audience for a scripted NBC series in more than 10 years.

That’s very good news as the James Spader drama shifts to 9 p.m. Thursday this week.

For the record, “The Voice” averaged 37.6 million viewers when NBC aired it after the Super Bowl in 2012.

Jimmy Fallon was a big beneficiary, too, from following the Super Bowl. “The Tonight Show” scored 9.8 million viewers. It’s the No. 2 audience for Fallon. His Feb. 17, 2014, debut with an Olympics lead-in averaged 11.3 million.
