Police are asking the public for help in finding a hit-and-run driver who seriously injured a school crossing guard as she was helping children across an intersection on the Far South Side.

The 27-year-old woman had a stop sign in her hand and a child by her side when she was struck by a black or dark-colored SUV around 3:55 p.m. Monday at 127th Street and Union Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood, according to police.

The crossing guard was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, officials said.

The SUV driver fled without offering assistance, police said. The driver was seen heading west on 127th Street and then north on Emerald Avenue at “a high rate of speed,” according to the police alert.

Neighbors told WGN-TV that they have been asking for a stop sign at the intersection for years.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521.
