A new superintendent for Township High School District 113 is expected to be announced at Monday night’s school board meeting.

School board members for District 113, which includes Highland Park and Deerfield high schools, will vote on a three-year contract, effective July 1, according to the meeting agenda. The new school chief will replace current Superintendent George Fornero, who’s retiring at the end of the school year.

An email from the school board to district parents said the new superintendent would not be at Monday night’s meeting but promised other opportunities “in the coming months” to get acquainted.

“We truly appreciate the many students, staff, parents and community members who shared their input to inform our search process,” the school board email said.

Once hired, the new superintendent will participate in the hiring of principals at Deerfield and Highland Park high schools and hiring for the position of director of student support services.

In July, Fornero announced that he would retire at the end of the school year, two years before the scheduled termination of his contract.

Fornero faced heavy public criticism last spring after the departure of popular former Highland Park High Principal Brad Swanson. Many residents who packed various school board meetings blamed Fornero and the school board for Swanson leaving.

In subsequent interviews, Fornero said the backlash was just one of several factors in his decision to retire early.
