Who’s back

Senior guard Nina Anderson and junior guard Sam Fagenholz both started a majority of the games last season. Anderson, an all-conference selection, was second on the team in scoring at 8.2 points a game, and Fagenholz was third at 7.1.

Fagenholz slides into the point guard position this year after the graduation of Kelly Kons, and Anderson will be asked to do a little of everything, including guard the other team’s best player.

“She’s one of those players who has a knack for the ball,” Hawks coach Mark Smith said of Anderson. “She’s our best defender and our fastest player.”

Who’s new

On her first career varsity touch last season, Jackie Ostojic made a 3-pointer in a regional semifinal game. Smith said the 6-1 junior guard will be a big piece of the puzzle this season, along with junior guard/forward Riley Eckhart.

“Jackie can get to the rim, shoot the three and rebound,” Smith said. “Riley gives us versatility. She can play four positions well.”

Smith said this is the smallest team he’s had in his decade coaching the Hawks. Ostojic is the tallest player, and she’s a true guard. The team’s two starting posts — senior Elizabeth Skoronski (5-10) and junior Julia Spuria (5-8) — are under 6-0.

Smith said he wouldn’t be surprised if his leading rebounders come from the guard position. Last year, Anderson averaged 4.9 rebounds a game, which was second on the team.

“We are going to need everybody to contribute to our rebounding,” Smith said.
