Love it or hate him, in June, Donald Trump made absolutely sure he was a household name in Chicago when he plastered his name in giant letters on his tower. It’s one of 2014’s most ridiculous stories, and it’s magnitude had the mayor re-examining the city’s rules for over-the-top signage.

Early 2014 brought a story even we couldn’t believe we were writing: The record cold snap was causing more poop on the CTA. Yep, that happened, and here’s to hoping “poop train” is something left behind in the new year.

Chicago adopted the most precious Luna, an orphaned baby otter acquired by the Shedd Aquarium in November. The little lady made the city lose it’s damn mind over her cuteness, and even forced one publication (ahem, us) to put her on the cover of a newspaper the day after the election.

Rounding out 2014’s news whirlwind is Chicago OKing a $13 minimum wage. It wasn’t the $15 activists were pursuing, but Chicago will eventually hit the $13 minimum wage mark in 2019.
