Finding the bottom of the basket wasn’t always easy for Leyden, but when the Eagles did, it often came from 3-point range.

Senior guard Adam Herrera led Leyden with six of the Eagles’ 12 3-pointers Monday in a 69-44 rout of Montini in their opening match of the 13th annual Glenbard West Holiday Classic.

“I try and make all my shots from three whenever I can,” Herrera said, who scored all of his 18 points from beyond the arc.

The Eagles (8-4) got started with a Herrera three on their opening possession and never relinquished the lead. After a quiet second and third quarter, Herrera halted a potential surge by the Broncos (0-11) with a pair of threes in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. He added two more to put the game out of reach.

“We talked going in about energy,” Eagles coach Bill Heisler said. “The first three minutes of the third quarter, we didn’t have that energy. In the fourth quarter we did.”

Senior forward Adam Braxton Jr. notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and senior center DeAndre Williams had nine points and three steals for Leyden.

Senior guard Sam Thomas led the Broncos with 11 points and five rebounds and senior forward Mike Mooney had eight points.
