An empty cardboard box was the cause of a two-hour Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Metra train delay during rush hour Tuesday evening.

Burlington Northern-Santa Fe spokesman Andy Williams said a resident reported seeing a suspicious package on the tracks by Eola Road near Aurora around 4 p.m.

Aurora police officers and the BNSF Police Department officials responded to the scene to investigate the threat.

BNSF Metra trains to and from Aurora were stopped following the report of the package.

“The threat was taken seriously,” Williams said. “It was carefully investigated.”

The investigation revealed the suspicious package was an empty cardboard box. Trains resumed around 6 p.m., Williams said.
