A Northlake man has been accused of assaulting his 80-year-old neighbor with bear spray.

Tony L. Yu, 26, of 18 King Arthur Court, Northlake was charged with aggravated battery on Nov. 30.

Around 5:30 p.m. Nov. 27, Yu walked down the stairs of his apartment building and saw his neighbor near his door. According to Northlake police reports, he pulled out a can of bear spray and sprayed the 80-year-old neighbor in the face through the screen door.

“He then fled the area,” said Commander Jay Militello. “He was unable to be located until he returned home two days later.”

Yu was arrested at 7 p.m. Nov. 29.

Bear spray is made of oleoresin capsicum. It’s a self-defense item similar to pepper spray. It causes a burning sensation, temporary loss of sight and restricted breathing.

Militello said that Yu had made “unsubstantiated allegations” against the victim in the past, accusing the 80-year-old of damaging his vehicle.

Yu is being held at Cook County Jail against $50,000 bond. His next court date is Dec. 2 at Circuit Court in Maywood.
