Skip the turkey and potatoes, Illinois wants Hawaiian Salad on the Thanksgiving table.

The New York Times Upshot blog has produced a state-by-state breakdown of the most unique Google searches for Thanksgiving recipes by state, and things get a little weird in the results for Illinois. According to the description of the interactive story from The Upshot, instead of looking for the most common search in each state (which is, of course, turkey), data on the most unique searches relative to other states was analyzed.

There’s a pretty great map of the most unique dish for each state from the post, but most interesting are the results from each state. Here’s the Top 10 from Illinois.

Hawaiian salad

Taffy apple salad

Pumpkin bar

Bacon wrapped dates

Cheesy hasbrown (sic) casserole (It’s unclear whether the misspelling here is intentional. These are Google searches after all.)

Seven layer salad

Sugar creme pie

Caramel cake

Scalloped corn

Velveeta

What do we learn? For one, Hawaiian salad is typically a culinary conglomeration of fruit and marshmallows, and resembles the Ambrosia salad Edward Scissorhands tastes in the film. (Sorry for the random reference, that’s the best comparison that can be made.) Also, let’s note that of all three salads on the list, none are even remotely healthy.

If Illinois isn’t your home state, head on over to the blog to check out your home state. And if you’re from Colorado, we’re sorry, we don’t even want to know what “frog eye salad” is.
