Fred LeBaron, a retired lawyer who now works part-time at Downers Grove Public Library, is famous in certain circles for being a reader of — and for championing — the burgeoning new-adult fiction genre, which targets the college-age set. He has shown up as a character in books, is frequently thanked in the acknowledgments and even has a Facebook fan page, “Team Fred.”

It started with a Boston book signing LeBaron couldn’t attend. His peers made a page “so I could be there virtually.” “Team Fred” now had more than 1,000 likes.

It comes as no surprise, then, that LeBaron’s house in Downers Grove, which he shares with his wife, is home to a cozy library stuffed with new-adult books — many in several iterations and personally inscribed to Fred. “If I ever get depressed, I read those messages,” LeBaron says.
