On Nov. 17, 2013, more than 70 tornadoes struck across the Midwest and the South, the fourth largest outbreak of twisters in Illinois since 1950. Washington, a city of 15,000 about 145 miles southwest of Chicago, was struck around 11 a.m. The tornado spent about an hour on the ground, and its path stretched 46 miles.

Google Earth satellite photos taken Nov. 18, 2013, show the destruction caused by the tornado, which reached wind speeds of 190 mph.

Photos taken five months later still show widespread evidence of destruction. Among those destroyed, there have been 160 homes rebuilt in Washington since the tornado, according to city officials.

Damage across the Midwest

More than 70 tornadoes touched down on Nov. 17, 2013, across seven states. The areas hit the hardest by the storms, such as Washington, saw tornadoes rated EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The EF scale ranges from EF-0, the weakest, to EF-5, the strongest rating. An EF-4 tornado can have winds of 168 to 199 mph, level homes and throw cars. Here is how the scale works.
