Fire midfielder Patrick Nyarko is expected to miss the next six to eight months after suffering a pair of injuries to his right knee in last Saturday’s loss at D.C. United.

Nyarko suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee in the 81st minute at RFK Stadium.

“It’s been real frustrating with the team not getting results and my injuries. It’s just been a long year,” Nyarko said on Wednesday following Fire training. “I’m positive about it, what has happened happened, just try to move forward and get back stronger.”

He’ll undergo surgery once swelling eases. Under the current timetable, Nyarko would miss the start of the 2015 season and might not return until June.

But Nyarko, who will have both surgery and rehabilitation in Chicago, hopes it won’t take that long.

“I’ve always been notorious (for) healing quicker from my previous injuries,” he said. “I’m going to work like never before and get back. It will be a very important season for myself and the team and I want to be a part of it.”.

Nyarko, who missed part of the season with a knee sprain and ankle procedure, had one goal and three assists in 17 MLS games this season.

He had an assist on Harry Shipp’s goal in the 67th minute last Saturday and suffered his injury 14 minutes later.
