After staying open Monday following another reported sighting of trooper-slaying suspect Eric Frein, some Pennsylvania schools were closed Tuesday, according to an alert posted on the Pocono Mountain school district’s website.
The closure comes a day after there was another suspected sighting of Frein. On Monday, police blocked off roads and officers were posted every few hundred feet along a road while a helicopter made tight circles overhead searching for Frein.
On Saturday a man with a mud-covered face, carrying a rifle was spotted by a woman near Pocono Mountain East High School, which Frein had attended. It prompted state police to move the search area.
The school district did not offer any information about Tuesday’s closure in the alert posted at 5:10 a.m. EDT.
Frein is suspected of killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson, 38, of Dunmore, and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass, 31, of Olyphant, as they were changing shifts. Douglass is recovering at a rehabilitation facility after being released from a Scranton hospital last week.
Residents in the Poconos have been on high alert since state police launched the search for Frein after identifying him as a suspect on Sept. 16 because his SUV was found abandoned about a mile north of the state police barracks.
The motive for the shootings is not clear, but Frein, 31, was known to enjoy playing military games in the Pocono Mountains as a member of an Airsoft team that dressed as World War II-era Serbian soldiers.
Frein was an expert marksman on his high school’s rifle team and the son of a retired Army general.

Frein, who never served in the armed forces, was unemployed. He had previously worked at a local vaccine manufacturing facility and seasonally at a local Boy Scouts camp.
