Illinois homeowners might want to think twice about filing a modest claim with their insurance company, a new report suggests.
InsuranceQuotes.com found that filing a single homeowner’s claim can raise premiums significantly in many states, including Illinois.
In Illinois, homeowners pay 17.7 percent more on average for insurance after making one claim, according to InsuranceQuotes.com. Illinois and Utah are tied for sixth. States where consumers would pay more are California, New Mexico, Arizona, Connecticut and, with a 32 percent increase after one claim, Wyoming.
The national average for a hike after one claim is 9 percent.
A second claim in Illinois can increase rates by an average of 32 percent, compared with a 20 percent average nationally for a second claim.
In Texas, home insurers aren’t allowed to boost premiums after one claim, InsuranceQuotes.com said.
InsuranceQuotes.com hired Quadrant Information Services to calculate rates using data for six major carriers in all 50 states. The policies covered a sample two-story, 1,800-square-foot single-family home for $144,000.
