Nancy’s Pizza recently announced it has added the Mike Ditka-inspired Da Ditka Pizza to its menu for a limited time in honor of National Pizza Month. The legendary Bears coach was named a spokesman for Nancy’s Pizza and Al’s Beef, which are owned by Mokena-based Chicago Franchise Systems, in May.
Da Ditka Pizza includes cheese, meatballs, pepperoni, onions and green peppers and comes in thin crust or original stuffed pizza. The pizza will be available only during football season. Al’s Beef sold a Spicy, Jumbo Ditka Dog — a char-grilled, 1/3 pound Vienna Beef sausage — during the month of July in celebration of National Hot Dog Month.
“I hope you’re hungry because ‘Da Ditka Pizza’ is a fully loaded pie that won’t disappoint,” said Ditka by press release. “When it comes to pizza, Nancy’s Pizza is the expert. When it comes to football, I’d like to think sometimes I am the expert. Put it all together and we got ourselves the best of both worlds: pizza and football.”
Ditka isn’t the only Chicago sports star to have had a pizza named after him. Giordano’s offered a Derrick Rose Special pizza with sausage and roasted red peppers after the Bulls star became an investor in the pizza chain in 2012. According to a Giordano’s spokesperon, the Derrick Rose Special is no longer on the menu because “it featured ingredients that are no longer available from the restaurant’s kitchen.”
