Police have taken a person of interest into custody in the sexual assault of a female student at Dominican University in River Forest early Saturday morning.

River Forest Deputy Chief of Police James O’Shea said the 22-year-old Chicago resident turned himself in Monday afternoon for his alleged involvement in an assault that occurred in a dorm room. The incident was reported to police about 10 a.m. Saturday.

“Reports indicate that a combination of River Forest Police and Chicago Police visiting his residence and local hangouts, and media coverage encouraged the subject to turn himself in,” O’Shea said in a statement.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, O’Shea said in an email.

Police believe the assault stemmed from a party in another dorm room involving underage drinking, O’Shea said, adding that the person of interest is not currently enrolled at the school.

O’Shea declined to comment on whether the victim had any previous contact with the individual.

The man has been banned from campus, according to university spokeswoman Jessica Mackinnon.

“The university is cooperating fully with the River Forest Police Department in its investigation of this incident,” Mackinnon said in a statement. “In addition, the university has opened its own confidential Title IX investigation of the incident and support services are being provided to the entire university community.”
