A 26-year-old former Mokena man is charged with criminal damage to government-owned property in connection with vandalism to four granite veterans memorial monuments in New Lenox.
Brian Sundstrom, of Bourbonnais, allegedly smashed four of the five granite slabs erected to honor the branches of the Armed Services. The monuments have stood in the New Lenox Commons since 2004.
The damage, discovered Sept. 28, has been termed irreparable by New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann, who estimates the replacement cost at $35,000.
New Lenox Police arrested Sundstrom Wednesday after reportedly matching his fingerprints to those found at the scene.
