When the afternoons start getting cooler and the sun sets a bit earlier, it’s the start of golf’s second season.
And the boys teams from Glenview and Northbrook are hoping to make some noise this fall. Glenbrook South and Glenbrook North’s golf teams won their respective divisions last week in the Central Suburban League.
“Ultimately, we try to arrange things to be playing our best golf at this time of the season,” Glenbrook South coach Jeff Paek said. “It’s a good group of kids. It seems that someone different picks up the others when we need it.”
A young South team looked to sophomore Charlie Nikitas to lead the way. He carded a 70 to take medalist honors at the CSL South meet, which the Titans won with a 301 team score. Peter Leftakes is the team’s only senior, and the Titans rely on juniors Grant Reese, Patrick Garden and Nick Campobasso, sophomore Kevin Paek and freshman Jarrett Prchal.

Glenbrook North, which finished fourth at the Class 3A state meet last year, won the CSL North title with a 307. Senior Luke Oberholtzer shot a 73 to tie for first, but he finished second in a playoff.
“The team that comes out of this regional is going to have a good chance to advance out of the sectional as well,” North coach Justin Gerbich said. “We’re coming along. I’ve had teams that have played well all year who didn’t play well in the regional and other teams that have been just OK and end up playing well in the postseason. I’m hoping this is that kind of team.”
The Spartans lost two players who finished in the top five at the state tournament last year. But Oberholtzer heads a strong returning group, along with Tyler Mulier, Matt Kull, Daniel Cole and surprising sophomore Charlie Van Cleave.
Both teams played in Tuesday’s regional at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook.
“We’re good, but when you have Lake Forest, Barrington, New Trier and others, that just makes you a decent team,” Gerbich said. “We’re capable of playing well. It just depends on the day and which four guys can do it for you. We hope we have the right four guys.”
