Fans who want to know more about Derek Jeter, who ended his stellar career with the New York Yankees on Sunday, can look to PBS for stories that never made the sports page.
Jeter will be among the sports stars on “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.” at 8 p.m. Tuesday on WUCF-Channel 24. The other stars in an episode called “Born Champions” are tennis legend Billie Jean King and former WNBA star Rebecca Lobo.
They each turn to Gates to learn more about their ancestors.
Jeter “confronts his ancestors’ lives as slaves,” PBS said.
“That’s unbelievable. To think the Jeter name came from a slave owner,” Jeter says in a preview clip.
King learns that her grandmother kept the secret of being born an orphan. Lobo learns that a Spanish ancestor had to flee that country after siding with a revolutionary.
