The San Diego Union-Tribune

has been tracking NFL arrests and citations, via media reports and public records, since 2000. The database is a collection of incidents more serious than common traffic violations and doesn’t presume to be complete as some arrests may not be reported or not released publicly.

On Sept. 9, when asked if the NFL has a domestic violence problem, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “One case is too many. One. What we have to do is go back and say, ‘If we have one case, that’s something we’ve got to address. If we have multiple cases, we have to change our training and our education to try and eliminate that issue.'”

Since 2000, 79 NFL players have been arrested 90 times for domestic abuse.

Domestic violence and total arrests of NFL players Per year

Arrests by year

Players are more likely to be arrested during the off-season, compared to the pre-season, regular season and playoffs.

Domestic violence arrests fall during the season as well. There were 32 arrests for domestic violence during the season between 2000 and 2013, and 53 arrests during the off-season for the same time frame. It is important to remember that this data shows arrests, not occurrences. The data would not reflect incidents not reported or in the public domain.
