Summer ended Monday with only three days at or above 90 degrees, the fewest since 2004. This is only the 10th time in 143 years that there have been three or fewer, according to the National Weather Service.
June was slightly warmer than usual, but July cooled off, with 21 days having average temperatures below normal. August also started out cool, but a second-half period of heat pushed the average for the month above normal. A deep chill in September pushed temperatures far below average, and a low temperature record was matched Sept. 12.
The summer of 2014 also saw above-average rainfall, ranking as the ninth wettest on record.
The data below show readings taken at O’Hare International Airport, the official weather station for Chicago since 1980.
Daily high and low temperatures June 1-Sept. 22
