A United Airlines plane bound for Brussels was diverted to Maine and then returned to O’Hare International Airport early Wednesday morning because of medical and technical issues, according to the airline.
Flight 972 left O’Hare Tuesday night with 239 passengers and made an unscheduled landing at Bangor International Airport in Maine due to a “customer medical issue,” according to United spokeswoman Karen May.
After departing again for Brussels, the flight returned to O’Hare early Wednesday morning “because of a mechanical issue,” May said.

Chicago Department of Aviation spokeswoman Karen Pride said the United plane departed from O’Hare at 6 p.m. Tuesday and returned to O’Hare just after 5 a.m. Wednesday.
May said United has worked with passengers to reschedule flights and provide accommodations. She said a new flight was scheduled to take customers to Brussels on Wednesday.
Just over a year ago, another United flight from O’Hare to Brussels and returned to the airport, that time because of a “security concern.”
