Sentencing for an 18-year-old Zion man who pleaded guilty to the murder of his infant son has been postponed pending a report on the man’s mental health.
Victor Salinas-Corona stands to receive up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced on Oct. 20.
Prosecutors said Salinas-Corona slammed his 5-month-old son Ayden’s head into a metal crib in February 2013 when the baby wouldn’t stop crying.
Prosecutors said that Salinas-Corona, who was 17 at the time, was “frustrated” by the baby’s constant cries and the blow killed the baby instantly.
Defense attorney Scott Gordon said Salinas-Corona might have sustained psychological and physical injuries when he was attacked by a group of men three years ago. Gordon said a private doctor was hired to do the a neuro-psychological evaluation but that the doctor’s report has not yet been reviewed.
“In a case like this, everyone wants to know why,” Gordon said. “This (evaluation) may provide answers and help bring closure.”
