Curt Schilling battled all sort of injuries during his 20 years in the big leagues, including his famous “bloody sock” game in 2004. But he never met a foe like cancer.
Schilling will make his return tonight to ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” after being out for eight months with mouth cancer. At one point, the former pitcher lost 80 pounds during treatments.
“Mentally, physically, [it was] the most difficult eight months of my life,” Schilling said in an interview with ESPN’s Karl Ravech. “Certainly the most painful.”
Schilling, 47, blamed himself for the cancer.
“I chewed tobacco for thirty-something years,” Schilling said. “I was warned and warned year after year, and I didn’t pay attention.”

Schilling said he’s lost so much weight because it is still painful to swallow. “I can’t put enough calories in my body” he said.
While Schilling said his cancer is in remission, he still feels weak and shaky at times.
