Harvey police shot and wounded a man early Sunday morning after he allegedly pointed his weapon at an officer.

Just after midnight, the Harvey Police Department responded to a report of shots being fired near the intersection of 156th Street and Dixie Highway, said Harvey spokesman Sean Howard.

The officer who responded first to the scene noticed a male subject with a gun fleeing the area, Howard said. When the officer pursued the gunman, the subject turned around and raised his weapon at the officer, who fired his revolver, wounding the subject, Howard said.

“He pointed toward the officer and the officer wasted no time in discharging his weapon,” Howard said.

The weapon was recovered at the scene and the subject was transported by ambulance to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Howard said. The man remained in stable condition around 10:30 a.m., he said.

Howard said that before officers arrived on scene, there were multiple people exchanging gunfire but said he did not have any details about other suspects. Harvey police are continuing to investigate the incident, Howard said.
