Caleb Roth sprinted back to New Trier’s sideline with 23 seconds left in Friday night’s nonconference game against Warren.

He wasn’t being subbed for this time. This time, Roth was celebrating his 2-yard touchdown run that turned out to be the winner in New Trier’s 14-7 home victory.

“I was just so happy, I didn’t really know what to do,” Roth said. “I kind of ran off the field and had to grasp the moment.

“That’s all the offensive line, I just finished it off.

The Trevians improved to 2-0, while Warren fell to 1-1.

“It’s a goal that we wanted to have all along, and hopefully we can keep moving forward,” Roth said.

Although Roth scored, sophomore quarterback Clay Czyzynski put New Trier into position to do so. Czyzynski ran four times for 40 yards on the final drive that started on the Trevians’ 45.

No. 20 Warren had a chance to capitalize on an interception a few minutes earlier but fumbled on the return.

Following a scoreless first quarter, each team got on the board in the second. New Trier struck first on a 55-yard interception return by linebacker Colin Casas for a 7-0 lead with 7 minutes, 33 seconds to play in the quarter.

Warren, which struggled on offense for most of the first half, tied it at 7-7 on a 17-yard pass from Jay Nickell to Caleb Reams, who hauled in the ball in the left corner of the end zone at 2:28. The score was set up by a 49-yard run by Darrius Crump, who finished the first half with 70 yards on 12 carries.
