Cargill said it will close its Milwaukee beef plant on Friday in response to a record low cattle supply amid years of drought.
The plant has 600 workers, but Cargill said that some workers will be given jobs at neighboring plants. Cargill, which is based in Minneapolis, bought the plant in 2001.
“The harsh reality is that the U.S. beef cattle herd is at its lowest level since 1951, with any significant herd expansion being years away,” Cargill Beef President John Keating said in a statement.
