A plan to guide development in the booming Fulton Market area of the West Loop won final approval from the Chicago Plan Commission Thursday, giving the city its first official “innovation district.”

The 10 commissioners present for the vote unanimously approved the Fulton Market Innovation District, which gives a framework for the uses, density and design of the area to help the city evaluate the deluge of development proposals it expects to receive in the popular meatpacking district.
