The Magic wanted extra draft picks. The Bulls needed to cut some salary to open cap space for a pair of free-agent signings.
On Monday, the teams made a trade to fulfill both objectives.
The Magic sent the draft rights to European big man Milovan Rakovic to the Bulls.
In return, Orlando received a second-round pick in 2015, a second-round pick in 2016, cash and forward Anthony Randolph from the Bulls.
The Magic intend to waive Randolph.
Rakovic, 29, has never played in the NBA. The Magic acquired his draft rights on draft day in 2007.
More Top Picks Checkout
From Orlando’s perspective, the move is a positive one because the Magic will receive two second-round picks. Rakovic isn’t a loss for the Magic because he wasn’t in the team’s plans.
The Bulls currently owns their own second-round pick in 2015 and the Portland Trail Blazers’ second-round pick in 2015. The Bulls also own their own second-round pick in 2016 and the Blazers’ second-round pick in 2016.
In each year, the Magic will receive the more favorable of those picks.
Randolph didn’t fit into the Bulls’ plans, and he’s due to earn $1.8 million this season, which is the final year of his contract. By trading Randolph away, the Bulls open more space that it can use to sign Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic.
