Joan Lorring

died on Friday in the New York City suburb of Sleepy Hollow, the

Associated Press reports

. She was 88.

Lorring received an Academy Award nom for her supporting role as Bessie Watty in the 1945 drama “

The Corn Is Green

” opposite Bette Davis. She also appeared in the pics “Three Strangers” and “The Verdict.”

Her TV career included turns in “Ryan’s Hope” and “The Love Boat,” while her Broadway roles included Marie in “Come Back, Little Sheba,” which earned her the Donaldson Award in 1950.

Lorring started her career by working in radio after immigrating to San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1939 to escape the impending Japanese invasion.

She’s survived by daughters Andrea and Santha Sonenberg, and her grandchildren Josh and Rebecca Jurbala.
