With summer just around the corner, we have stripes on the brain. Not the straightforward, straight-laced nautical variety in predictable white and red or navy.
We’re thinking bold, unfussy stripes with a beach bent.

To refresh indoor spaces or add oomph to a porch or patio, reach for surprising color combinations, such as burnt orange, gray, aqua and mellow yellow. Think less Martha’s Vineyard, more Malibu. A multicolored stackable storage table is an easy way to bring nontraditional stripes into a home office. Created by the design studio Rich Brilliant Willing for Ikea’s PS 2014 collection, this mod-looking statement piece is also a convenient way to store whatever you want out of sight. (The table also comes in all white.) This beachy color palette pops up throughout the collection.
Equally statement-making is the gray bottle vase from KleinReid’s Sur collection. Available from Room & Board, the handmade porcelain vessel features colorful stripes and an expressive shape that would add interest to any mantel or tapletop vignette. We could also see it as a centerpiece, clustered with other, variously shaped striped Sur vases.
CB2’s surf-inspired collection, also called Sur, features a laid-back take on stripes with its Tulate Pillow. Inspired by traditional textile patterns of Canton Patzite, a small village in western Guatemala, the pillow is woven using a classic technique. It also helps local artisans earn a sustainable income from their trade. We’d display the pillow on outdoor or indoor furniture along with solid-colored pillows in complementary shades.
