The La Grange Police Department is ramping up enforcement of seatbelt laws May 9 through Memorial Day as part of a “click it or ticket” program.

Most seatbelt tickets issued during the enforcement period will be for $35, but some could be more depending on circumstances, Sergeant Miles Odom said.

The La Grange department is one of many departments around the country participating in the seatbelt campaign through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the administration’s website. La Grange police issued a news release warning drivers they would be ticketed if they don’t wear seatbelts.

The seatbelt law applies to everyone in a vehicle, including people in the back seat, the release notes. The release likens the force of experiencing a crash without a seatbelt to falling from a three-story building or being run over by a 3.5-ton elephant.
