-Marvel’s “
: The Winter Soldier” has launched impressively with $10.2 million at Thursday night pre-shows in the U.S.
The figure came in well above comparable Thursday night figures for similar tentpoles, such as $9 million for “Man of Steel,” $8.8 million for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” $7.1 million for ‘Thor: The Dark World” and $4.9 million for “Divergent.”
The Thursday numbers for the “Captain America” sequel give an early indication that the
starrer has enough potential pull to match forecasts of a domestic weekend above $90 million — which would be the top April opening of all time, eclipsing the $86 million-plus bow for Universal’s “Fast Five” in 2011.
“Man of Steel” went on to finish its opening weekend in June with $116 million and “Thor: The Dark World” grossed $85 million in its first frame in November.
“Winter Soldier” has generated solid reviews, scoring an 89% “fresh” rating so far on Rotten Tomatoes -significantly better than the first “Captain America,” which ended with a 79% positive rating.
The Thursday numbers for “Winter Soldier” included $1.2 million from 344 Imax locations.
