The first of six data reports hits Kent Barnds’ mobile device at 5:45 every morning. He scrutinizes each one, crunching globs of numbers that will help plan his day.

Barnds is not a stock analyst checking overnight markets, but a vice president at Augustana College in Rock Island, in western Illinois. By 7 a.m., he’ll know the status of the applicant pool, which financial aid offers are still on the table and whether his 10 counselors fanned out across the U.S. are hitting their target audiences.
