A Streamwood High School student was charged as a juvenile after police found a handgun near the campus of the northwest suburban school, police said today in a press release.
A handgun was recovered Friday in a residential area just off school property, police said.
Police said the student was charged with unlawful use of a weapon on school grounds, aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting/obstructing arrest.
The male student, whose name is not being released because he was charged as a juvenile, was taken to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center today.
Rumors that a firearm had been brought to the campus led to a nearly 90-minute lockdown of school property starting at around 2:30 p.m. Friday, police said. Police and K-9s from multiple agencies scoured school property to investigate. Police said there were no injuries linked to the incident.

According to a message from the safety coordinator of District U-46 that was sent to parents, students at the school reported to a dean that a classmate had a weapon at about 2 p.m. Friday.
That student was removed from a classroom for questioning, but the student ran from the building into the surrounding neighborhood, the district message said.
District officials said the school was immediately placed into lockdown, a precaution that was lifted once it was determined the student was no longer near the building.
Students were kept in the school for almost another hour because of the lockdown.
