Google announced Project Tango, a 5-inch smartphone prototype designed to “give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion,” this week. The phone, which runs on Android, can capture 3D motion and map it simultaneously, logging as many as 250,000 measurements a second. This device could pave the way for indoor mapping, advances in gaming and applications for the blind. Two hundred Project Tango prototypes are available to developers who want to build out user experiences for the platform. Google expects to ship them all by March 14.
