SOCHI, Russia — The U.S. women’s curling team, already eliminated from medal competition, had one of the best days of the tournament Sunday. But, like most other days, it ended with a loss.

The U.S. took unbeaten Canada to an 11th frame (extra innings) and was in a good position to win the match. But Canada skip Jennifer Jones sent the perfect shot down the ice to give the U.S. its seventh loss in eight games.

If the U.S. had better positioned a “guard” stone, to block the last shot the chances would have been much better for a victory. But, like most things the U.S. men’s and women’s teams have done, it fell short.

Canada is hoping to make Olympic history Monday by becoming the first team to go undefeated in the nine-game round robin. Canada (8-0) and Sweden (6-2) already have qualified for the next round.

The U.S. men’s team lost in the morning to Canada 8-6 and in the evening session to Sweden 6-4. The team is 2-6.

Cross Country Skiing:

Sweden pulled of a men’s and women’s sweep in relays when it won the men’s 40-kilometer race. Sweden also won this race in 2000. Russia won the silver and France took the bronze. The U.S. team of Andy Newell, Erik Bjornsen, Noah Hoffman and Simi Hamilton finished 11th.

Biathlon:

The men’s 15-kilometer mass-start race was postponed until Monday because of fog, which hindered the athletes on the shooting range.
