It took four days to pick a jury.
The trial is expected to raise questions about how Cook County prosecutors are using Illinois’ anti-terrorism law and whether Chicago police crossed any lines when they infiltrated protest groups before the 2012 NATO summit.
The three defendants – Brian Church, 22, Jared Chase, 25, and Brent Betterly, 25 — were arrested after police raided the Bridgeport apartment where the out-of-state men were staying and seized four Molotov cocktails four days before world leaders met here to discuss security in Afghanistan and other issues.
The NATO 3 are facing trial together on 11 counts — including conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of explosives and attempted arson — and face up to 40 years in prison. Each has been held in lieu of $1.5 million bail since the arrests.
