The scene at 4500 S. Racine Ave., where a car came to rest after a 21-year-old man was shot in the head.

A detective in a black jacket, shirt and tie stepped forward and introduced himself.

“He’s at Stroger right now,” he told the two, referring to the hospital five miles north. “They’re working on him.”

A close friend of theirs had left a party in a car with three people earlier in the night, Sapata and Shew said. About 2:10 a.m., the car passed 44th Street and Paulina Avenue and gang members approached flashing gang signs, police said.

A young woman behind the wheel sped away and someone fired at the car, busting the back window. A 21-year-old in the back seat was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head.

The driver continued until 43rd and Racine, where people in the car flagged down a security guard. Soon, an ambulance was on its way.
