An apparent lightning strike caused a house fire in Gary, Indiana this afternoon, leaving a man dead and a baby in critical condition, while in a separate incident also in Gary, a man working on a billboard was struck and killed by lightning.

The fire department responded to a home in the 1100 Block of Jefferson Court after reports of smoke coming from the home, Gary Fire Department Chief of Operations Mark Jones told WGN-TV.
The fire department searched the home and found the two boy and the man, both unconscious. The 42-year old man was take to Gary Northlake Methodist Hospital, and declared dead. The 9-month-old was airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where he was in critical condition.
A man working on a billboard along 27th Avenue was struck by lightning, according to Jones, and transported to Gary Methodist in cardiac arrest. He did not survive.
The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
