Ace Hardware said Wednesday that its second-quarter profit jumped, mostly because of a boost from an acquisition late last year.

Ace, based in Oak Brook, earned $42.9 million, up from $14.9 million a year earlier.

Revenue rose by almost 10 percent, to $1.17 billion from $1.07 billion in the same quarter last year.

The December 2012 purchase of WHI Holdings Corp., which indirectly owns the 86-store Westlake Ace Hardware retail chain, added $77.7 million in retail merchandise sales, but sales at that chain were hurt by a colder spring that crimped the lawn and garden segment.

At Ace overall, sales at established stores rose 5.3 percent in the quarter, driven by new merchandising and branding initiatives.
