A 37-year-old man died Saturday night after being rescued from the waters off Lake View Beach at the Indiana Dunes, according to the National Park Service.
Gonzola Silva, of Lafayette, Ind., was pulled from the water at around 5:30 p.m., shortly after rescuers saved two of his family members, who were struggling in the water after an attempt to reach their drowning relative, said Ken Mehne, a law enforcement specialist with the Park Service.
Silva was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City, where he was put on a ventilator, Mehne said. He was pronounced dead at around 9:30 p.m.
Rescuers spotted Silva’s body about 40 yards from where the relatives were rescued, Mehne said. Officials believe he may have been under water for about 20 minutes.
Mehne, who has worked at the Indiana Dunes for three summers, said the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore averages about one to two drownings per year.
