The national fee for a checking account overdraft is up slightly this year to $30, according to a study by research firm Moebs Services.

The increase is fueled by credit unions as banks fees stayed steady. The median overdraft fee among banks has been at $30 since 2010. At credit unions, the median fee is at $28, up from $27 in 2012 and $25 for the three years prior.

The largest financial institutions have the highest price at $35 per overdraft, while the main street community banks and credit unions have the lowest price at $25.

The West and Midwest still have lower overdraft prices with a median of $29.

Overall industry revenue from overdraft fees fell in the first quarter to an annualized total of $31.1 billion, Moebs said.

The survey covered nearly 3,000 depositories reporting fees as of June, compared with the last six months of 2012.
