The sentencing for former Bears receiver Sam Hurd, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking just days before his April trial was set to begin, has been reset for Aug. 14, delaying it by two weeks, court records show.
The former Northern Illinois player, currently in prison, was charged with drug conspiracy, accused of conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana beginning in July 2011 and continuing through June 6, 2012. He was first arrested outside a Chicago area steakhouse in December 2011.
Probation office officials need more time to develop Hurd’s pre-sentencing report, which is an assessment of Hurd, legal aspects of the case and provides sentencing advice, said his attorney, Jay Ethington.
“Nothing unusual about that,” said his attorney, Jay Ethington. “It’s just over scheduling.”
Hurd’s attorneys have described the San Antonio native as a marijuana user but not a cocaine dealer. They plan to contest the government’s portrayal of Hurd as an aspiring drug lord during sentencing. Hurd faces up to life in prison and a $10 million fine.
