Required training for some Homer Glen Plan Commission officials on the Open Meetings Act was held this week.

“It’s a very good tool for people that serve publicly,” said commission member Tom Bernicky, who took the training on a computer Monday night at Village Hall.

A Plan Commission meeting was scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Monday, but shortly after the scheduled start, only Bernicky, Chairman Kevin Hoffmeister and village staff liaison Erin Venard were there, leaving commission members absent. Without a quorum, no meeting could be held.

While the meeting would have officially opened if enough members had been present, the focus would have been Open Meetings Act training, which commission officials can choose to take on their own time, Venard said.

While Bernicky took the training, Hoffmeister said he also planned to take the training Monday.

Illinois elected and appointed officials are required to receive the training, Venard said. Plan Commission members must complete training on the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act by Jan. 1, Venard said. They will take the FOIA training later this year, she said.

“They just teach you about the act, and then you have to answer a couple of questions about it,” Venard said.
