Former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps has been diagnosed with bladder cancer, ESPN announced late Thursday.
Per the network, for whom Phelps serves as a college basketball analyst, the 71-year-old former Irish coach has had surgery and will begin treatment near his home in South Bend, Ind., next week.
Phelps coached Notre Dame for 20 years and went 393-197, featuring 14 seasons of 20 wins or more. His teams also defeated No. 1-ranked clubs on seven occasions.

A statement quoted in an ESPN story said that Phelps “and his family appreciate your thoughts and prayers as he prepares for the 2013-2014 college basketball season.”
