While watching coverage of the tragedy involving the Boston Marathon, I couldn’t help but look back at other events we’ve witnessed over the years and remember how important sports, in particular high school sports, have been for myself and many others in tough times.
During these tough times we should never forget, but we also need to forget, at least for a few hours.
That’s where sports serves a much-needed purpose for many of us.

High school sports is a tight-knit community. Want to gauge the pulse of a town or an area? Look no further than the local high school games.
During Friday nights all over this state in the fall, you won’t find a better atmosphere than at a high school game. Pro and college sports serve the same purpose, but for me the feeling is not the same. That tight-knit community, I’m guessing, feels the same way. They, too, are looking to celebrate a few hours of good in a world with too much bad.
The charm of most high school sports is how local they are. You see neighbors and friends and people you come across in everyday life at high school games. Nothing heals the wounds of a community better than coming together for a shared purpose.
I don’t know how many times I’ve left it all behind for a few hours to cover or watch a game. From football to softball to baseball to hoops, just being able to get away, relax and enjoy the competition works for me.
That’s not to say high school sports don’t have issues. High school sports are far from perfect.
Hopefully high school sports and sports in general can help us forget, at least for a few hours. Those escapes are always needed.
