Edward Hospital & Health Services has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in a transaction that will create one of the largest health systems in the western suburbs.

The merger, expected to be complete by this summer, has cleared regulatory approval by the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department but still must get the go-ahead from state regulators.

The combined health system will have three hospitals, about 50 clinics, doctors’ offices and other outpatient locations, and annual revenues of more than $1 billion.
