, two Baltimore rappers who have seen success outside of the city, have pledged their allegiance to their hometown’s football team. This week, they’ve released separate songs in support of the Ravens. Both are titled “Purple Reign,” but sound very different.
(Note:
spoke with Los and the song’s producer, J. Oliver, and has a
about the origin of “Purple Reign.”)
With its regal horns and stadium-sized hand claps, Los’ “Purple Reign” sounds ready for the radio right now. It also invokes the underdog attitude the team wears so well. It’s almost like Ray Lewis wrote the chorus himself: “Did it on our own, nobody gave us a chance / No matter the odds, keep God in our circle / Now every time it rain, we turn the whole world purple.” Fittingly, the song ends with an inspirational soundbyte of No. 52.

Best line(s): “I ball so hard at the club, I need an endzone dance / I ran it straight off the block, straight like that / 27s on that Chevy, screaming ‘Ray Rice back!'”
For Mullyman’s version, producer and Club vet DJ Booman loops an obvious-but-awesome Prince sample (can you guess the song?) and pairs it with a snapping snare and a tip-toeing hi-hat to create a lean backdrop for Mully’s slick talk. The beat is a monster, and I think Mully name-drops every NFL team over it, too.

Best line: “They say I’ll never make it ‘cuz I’m from the worst town / but first hater that cross me, he’ll be first down”
