University of Chicago Medicine on Monday unveiled its new, 10-story, $700 million hospital in Hyde Park that will open to patients Feb. 23.

Gov. Pat Quinn was on hand.

Named the Center for Care and Discovery, the 1.2-million-square-foot hospital has 240 private patient rooms and 21 operating rooms able to accommodate patients with the most complex medical conditions. It will house specialty-care areas for cancer, gastrointestinal disease, neuroscience, surgery and imaging.

The center will replace some of the capacity in the medical system’s 1983-built Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital, which will remain open. U. of C. plans eventually to rehab the Mitchell hospital and convert all of its patient rooms private.
